Seven Major Causes of Burn Injuries

While the summer can be a fun time for just about everyone, it is also the time when people are most likely to suffer from accidental burns. If you are not careful, or if others act recklessly, your fun in the sun could be interrupted by a trip to the emergency room. Here are seven major ways that people can suffer accidental burn injuries:

  • Contact with sources of fire
      • For obvious reasons, the most common way that people suffer burn injuries is due to direct contact with fire. Often, this happens while people are cooking, but it can also happen as a result of contact with candles, portable burners, or campfires.
  • Contact with hot metal or glass
      • People can underestimate just how quickly metal or glass can heat up, or how hot it can get. Exposure to hot metal or glass can easily cause severe burns, even just from something like being heated up in the sun.
  • Exposure to steam or boiling water
      • Steam burns and burns from boiling water can be surprisingly severe. Often this can happen due to mishandling hot food or drinks, or due to any other activity that involves boiling water.
  • Sunburns
      • While sunburns are often seen as relatively unserious, they can be surprisingly severe if left untreated. When people stay outside without sunscreen, the consequences can result in burn injuries serious enough to require medical attention.
  • Electrical burns
      • With the proliferation of electrical devices in modern society, the risk of electrical burns has never been higher. All it takes is a loose wire or short circuit to cause an accidental electrocution, or to cause serious burn injuries.
  • Chemical burns
      • Chemical burns are caused by exposure to caustic chemicals, such as paint thinner or certain household cleaners. Mishandling these chemicals can cause severe damage to exposed flesh, comparable to any conventional burn injury.
  • Radiation burns
    • X-rays and tanning beds are common in the modern day, but over exposure to them without protection can result in radiation burns. Certain other radiological procedures can cause burn injuries when handled incorrectly.
